I Found My Hairdresser

I am just so excited with this statement: I have found my hairdresser. My cousin has been my hairdresser ever since I was in elementary school. She was amazing and I loved it. Six years ago she and her family moved to Africa to do some pretty amazing work with some kids who needed love and rescuing. They gave up their lives here in Canada and went into the unknown. This left me without my cousins (she has 4 boys and I missed them all so much) and without a hairdresser. I've spent the following years trying to find someone that I could call "my new hairdresser". It may sound silly, but this was a big and hard job for me. I felt so awkward going to so many people. I tried malls in my town and other towns, MagicCut type franchise places, higher end salons (thinking you pay a little more you get a little more - nope!), and places referred to by friends and family. I think in all those years I only had one cut that I left the salon liking and that was in the mall in Burnaby. I was lost in the hair world. Alas! 3 weeks ago my journey has come to an end! And it is rather a fun story!

My mom sat beside this hairstylist on the plane ride home from Hawaii and they chatted most of the way. She came home and told me about him and his salon in Vancouver. I was pretty excited to go to him for my next haircut. He sounded totally like he knew what he is talking about and he has even won some awards. My mom booked me a birthday cut appointment on a Friday. The night before I thought that I would look him up on the internet and see what other people thought of his salon. There was NO info on him. No reviews, no pictures, no nothing. Who was this guy that I was going to see that there was no chatter about him and his work. Was this trip going to be worth it? So, Friday morning we sent Anna off to school with Peter while mom, Isaac, Laura, and I headed into Vancouver.

All I can say is WOW! If you want a total salon experience with amazing conversation, a professional who knows what he is doing, and amazing results - go to Remus. He is the only one who works in his salon (even tho there were 3 chairs - he leaves it up to you which one you would like. I went for center stage!). To keep Laura a little occupied he turned the tv to Doodlebops and she sat in a salon chair with her baby to watch it. He said that this was our appointment and he even locked the door so there would be no interruptions - not to mention that Laura couldn't get free either. It is a beautiful salon. He just renovated in the last little while. A wall of windows let us watch the hustle and bustle of the busy Vancouver street.

He started by asking me what the problems were with my hair. After telling him that I wanted shorter hair and the reasons why he told me, "You don't want short hair." But I was all like - ya I do. We talked about it for a couple minutes and I found myself (little passive Carolyn who has a hard time telling hairdressers my true opinion) asking him a couple of times if he really thought short hair wouldn't be right on me (my passive way of saying cut it short!). After about the third time I finally thought to myself - I've come all this way to have a cut by a pro who knows what he is doing. Lets go with it and see what he does.

I told him that I would need to feed Isaac, but I could do that once I had the cape on (it would be ideal - I could feed him without wasting time. The clock was ticking, but Isaac needed to eat). Remus told me that this was my appointment and that the salon was ours. If I needed to feed Isaac before the cut that was totally fine. I took a little sigh of relief. I wasn't looking forward to feeding Isaac under the cape, but it would've worked it I had to do it.

Oma said she wanted Laura to get a cut. I had done a pretty good job of cutting her hair, but as it was growing out you could see all the imperfections magnified. He was so great with her and she was an amazing client sitting in the big chair! She sat much more still for him than she did for me in the bathtub back in January. The funniest part was when he was cutting he said ever so quietly and observantly to Laura, "You have a chunk missing." Yes Remus, that was mommy's doing. I am no hairstylist. Just a mom equipped with some dingleberry scissors.

Remus had this interesting scissor swing technique that almost looked like he belonged in a Western. You know, how cowboys twirl their guns to get them in and out of their holsters? He would cut her hair and then swing/twirl his scissor to rest position so both hands were free. It was quite amazing and impressive. I asked him if he has ever hurt himself by doing that. He said no and that the only time he hurt himself was when he dropped them. I was trying to figure out what he meant. Did they bounce off the floor and stab him in the leg? He then explained by holding up the scissors to show me, "$700." OK. I got it. He then pulled out another pair that was even more. They sure were good scissors. They cut through Laura's hair like butter (sounds better if you say it with a New York accent - Like Budda).
Laura didn't say much of anything thru the whole cut, but Remus told mom that even tho she wasn't talking she was communicating the whole time. He could tell by her eyes and body language what she was saying. He did a great job with her cut and with her as a client. Awesome!

Next it was my turn, and now my quiet, placid little daughter was super happy and chatty. She hopped around the salon and was climbing up all the chairs and even climbing on me as I was getting my hair washed. We could tell that she loved her new do!

There was such interesting conversation during the whole appointment. Remus gave me so many tips and info about hair and hair products. At one point he laid a comb flat on my head. I joked about what he was doing. "You using a level?" I asked him.
"Yep," he said. He told me that it is important to look at the shape of a person's head to really cut it well. You need to see where the highest point is, where it curves, where it is flat, etc.
So here we are with our new dos. It was a GREAT experience and I have never looked forward to my hair growing so much. I can't wait to go back. Hopefully I can bring someone with me so they can get an amazing cut too. My mom bought me some product, a brush, and blow dryer. Man, I felt soooooo spoiled. I love my hair. It feels and looks so much healthier.

I couldn't believe I forgot my camera. I remember taking such great photos of Anna when she got her first cut. It was great when Remus said that he has a camera that he could take a couple photos for me. It was cool to have both Laura's hair and my hair laying on the floor together. I just had to get a photo. Look how even Laura's baby and The Wiggles even made it into the shots.
Ok. So that was a long post. Sheesh.
